90-day health challenge anti-cancer foods cancer resilience healthy living Sep 02, 2024

Have you ever wondered what’s really in your deodorant? Or why more and more people are ditching the store-bought stuff for natural alternatives? Today, we’re not just reading labels—we’re making our own! Plus, I’ll walk you through the key differences between antiperspirants and deodorants, and why certain essential oils can make your DIY products even more effective.

Welcome to Day 45 of our Proven Cancer Strategies Revealed: 90 Days to Cancer Resilience series. I’m [Your Name], and today, we’re stepping into the kitchen to create two fabulous, toxin-free beauty products: a natural deodorant and a nourishing body scrub. These DIY solutions are not only easy to make but also a healthier choice for your skin and overall wellness. Let’s get started!

Understanding Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant

1. Antiperspirant vs. Deodorant: What’s the Difference?

Most of us use these products every day, but do we really know the difference? Antiperspirants are designed to reduce sweating by blocking your sweat glands with aluminum-based compounds. While this might keep you dry, it’s not the healthiest option for your body. Deodorants, on the other hand, don’t stop sweating. Instead, they neutralize the bacteria that cause odor. That’s why natural deodorants, like the one we’re making today, can be a safer, more effective option.

2. The Rise of Body Deodorants: Are They a Good Alternative?

Body deodorants are becoming a popular all-over solution, but it's crucial to check those ingredients. Some might leave a residue or contain chemicals you’re trying to avoid. By making your own, you have full control over what’s inside—no hidden surprises!

DIY Natural Deodorant with Essential Oil Options

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder (or cornstarch)
  • 10-15 drops essential oil (lavender, tea tree, or lemon)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup shea butter (for added moisture)

Instructions:

  1. If using shea butter, melt it gently along with the coconut oil.
  2. Mix in the baking soda and arrowroot powder until smooth.
  3. Add essential oils and stir well.
  4. Transfer to a BPA-free plastic jar. Apply a small amount to your underarms as needed.

Essential Oils 101

Choosing the right essential oils can make your DIY deodorant even better. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Tea Tree Oil: Strong antibacterial and antifungal properties.
  • Lavender Oil: Calming and antimicrobial.
  • Eucalyptus Oil: Refreshing and cleansing.

How to Choose the Right Oils for Your Skin:

  • Sensitive Skin: Opt for gentler oils like lavender and chamomile.
  • Oily Skin: Use tea tree or lemon oil for their astringent properties.
  • Dry Skin: Consider using rose or geranium oil for added moisture.

DIY Nourishing Body Scrub

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup sugar (or salt for a coarser scrub)
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 10-15 drops essential oil (peppermint, lavender, or orange)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the coconut oil if necessary.
  2. Mix the coconut oil with the sugar (or salt) until well combined.
  3. Add the essential oils and mix thoroughly.
  4. Store in a BPA-free plastic jar. Use by massaging onto damp skin in circular motions before rinsing off.

Essential Oil Combinations for Your Scrub:

  • Peppermint & Lavender: Relaxing yet invigorating—a perfect all-over body refresher.
  • Orange & Vanilla: A sweet, uplifting scent that leaves your skin smelling delicious.
  • Rose & Geranium: Luxurious and floral, ideal for a spa-like experience at home.

Adding Color:

Why not add a splash of color to your body scrub? Natural powders like beetroot, turmeric, or cocoa not only give your scrub a beautiful hue but also come with added skin benefits. For instance:

  • Beetroot Powder: Adds a pinkish-red color and is rich in antioxidants.
  • Turmeric Powder: Adds a golden yellow color and has anti-inflammatory properties.
